Can Dogs Eat Marshmallows?
Please read the risks below before offering any.
Are marshmallows safe for dogs?
Marshmallows are a soft, sugary confection made mainly from sugar, corn syrup and gelatin. A plain marshmallow is not especially toxic, but it is essentially pure sugar, and some sugar-free versions contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
How to reduce the risks if you offer marshmallows
- Check the label for xylitol before considering any, especially on sugar-free versions
- If the marshmallow is plain and xylitol-free, offer only a small piece, rarely
- Choose a treat made for dogs instead
What to avoid
- Any marshmallow or product containing xylitol
- Chocolate-dipped or roasted marshmallows in s'mores, which add another hazard
- Regular feeding, because of the sugar content
How many marshmallows can my dog have?
If you decide to offer marshmallows despite the cautions above, give just one tiny taste and check with your vet first, especially if your dog has any health condition. When in doubt, skip it.
Signs your dog may be having a problem
Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, pawing at the mouth, loss of appetite, tiredness, a swollen or painful belly, or trouble breathing. Contact your vet right away if you see these signs, or if your dog has eaten any of the parts listed above.
