Can Cats Eat Nutmeg?
Please read the risks below before offering any.
Is nutmeg safe for cats?
Nutmeg is a warm baking spice that contains myristicin, a compound that is toxic in concentrated amounts. A pinch of nutmeg in a baked dish is unlikely to cause serious harm, but the spice itself contains myristicin and can cause toxicity in cats. Cats are obligate carnivores, so they get what they need from meat and never need nutmeg. If you offer it at all, treat it as a rare, tiny extra.
How to reduce the risks if you offer nutmeg
- Keep the spice jar and any nutmeg-heavy desserts out of reach
- A crumb of baked goods with a small amount of nutmeg is a lower concern than the raw spice
- If your cat ate a significant amount of nutmeg or a nutmeg-heavy dish, call your vet or a poison hotline
What to avoid
- The ground spice or whole nutmeg eaten directly
- Eggnog, pumpkin pie and other desserts heavy in nutmeg
How much nutmeg can my cat have?
If you decide to offer nutmeg despite the cautions above, give just one tiny taste and check with your vet first, especially if your cat has any health condition. When in doubt, skip it.
Signs your cat may be having a problem
Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, pawing at the mouth, loss of appetite, tiredness, a swollen or painful belly, or trouble breathing. Contact your vet right away if you see these signs, or if your cat has eaten any of the parts listed above.
