Can Dogs Eat Ham?
Please read the risks below before offering any.
Is ham safe for dogs?
Ham is cured or smoked pork, usually high in salt, often served as sliced meat or on the bone. A small piece of plain ham is unlikely to cause immediate harm, but ham is very high in salt and fat, which can lead to an upset stomach or contribute to pancreatitis.
How to reduce the risks if you offer ham
- Offer only a small piece of lean, plain ham, rarely
- Trim off visible fat where possible
- Avoid it entirely for dogs with pancreatitis, kidney disease or heart conditions
What to avoid
- Ham bones, which can splinter and cause choking or blockage
- Regular servings, because of the very high salt content
- Ham glazed with sugar, honey or spices
How much ham can my dog have?
If you decide to offer ham despite the cautions above, give just one tiny taste and check with your vet first, especially if your dog has any health condition. When in doubt, skip it.
Signs your dog may be having a problem
Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, pawing at the mouth, loss of appetite, tiredness, a swollen or painful belly, or trouble breathing. Contact your vet right away if you see these signs, or if your dog has eaten any of the parts listed above.
Frequently asked questions
